Project SmartCart

The goal of this project is to help visually impaired shoppers locate products in a grocery store setting. Our solution is the SmartCart, a shopping cart that guides a person to a product while assisting them in object avoidance. The SmartCart uses a navigation system and a haptic feedback system to accomplish this task. The user communicates their desired destination (a product name) through a wireless headset. The navigation software on a backend server calculates the best route to the product and provides directions to the user. RFID technology is used to track the cart’s location as it traverses the store. The shopping cart’s handlebars are equipped with rumble motors to alert the user when the cart has encountered an object in its path. The SmartCart uses these methods to accommodate visually impaired persons in independent shopping.
